Fear and Loathing in Finland

This one of those vanishingly rare posts you will almost never see: An expression of nationalistic pride in Finland. I count myself as an Australian first in spite of my land of birth and the prejudiced opinions of some of my countrymen, but I don't mind barracking for Finland when Australia's not in the running. Of course, barracking for Finland in the much reviled Eurovision song contest is a bit of a running joke, for a country that has come last eight times. So you can imagine my squeeful surprise on hearing that not only has Finland won, but they did so with a band that so boldly projects a new public face for Finland, one far removed from our tradition of folk singers and accordian players. It's amazing enough that they were even nominated for Eurovision. Go Lordi!

I'm happy for you. I think that the Eurovision Song Contest is the jokiest, sappiest thing I've ever witnessed - in fact, I couldn't watch more than ten minutes of it - all that preachy, politically correct pop seriously got on my nerves.

But, Finns did really seem to suffer a complex from losing so much at it - sort of the way I, as a Bostonian suffered from the Red Sox losing so much before winning it all in 2004! So, congrats to the Finnish, to Lordi, and to you!

Ristin and I started watching it, in fact I told him I don't think Finland has ever won, but we gave up for much the same reason. If only I'd checked online, I would have found out a hard core death metal band from Finland won and kept watching just for that.

it was a great song - and the first time ever I'd predicted the winner!

I just loved the way all the yugoslav countries were giving each other the top marks though!
