You need a better dictionary! I admit I didn't know what it meant until I stumbled across it in the dictionary. It means of or pertaining to sciolism, which admittedly isn't a very helpful definition. If we dig further though, we find it means "pretentious superficiality of knowledge" according to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. By which I mean I like to explore, but I don't get very deeply into anything. (I'm not so much emphasising the pretentious part, because I like to think I'm usually only pretentious in a self-mocking way.) Answers.com
goes further by suggesting it can apply to a pretentious attitude to scholarship, which I find endlessly amusing because they then offer me "expert advice" on sciolism. What would they do; refer me to myself? I was once offered a position as an online expert on kangaroos by some pretentious start up internet company. (I doubt it would have offered much, if any, money.) What that said to me was that they were not serious about their research.
