[Politics] Net censorship

Australia has joined the freedom-loving countries of Iran and North Korea on a black-list of net censorship. I've seen a lot of snide commentary about this, but don't think it can't happen to you. France is openly planning the same thing and you can be sure that other Western countries (the USA included) will be watching closely to see what happens here.

The Australian government seems to be refreshingly immune to reason on this topic and seems to be happy to go along with Senator Stephen Conroy's power kick, which he's obviously enjoying immensely. He even thinks he can bully Google and Facebook. I just hope he tries to block Google, YouTube and Facebook and then he will see just what happens when the sheep rise up in anger.

Germany's also doing it. All to protect THE CHILDREN, of course!

ahh yes - I wonder how long it will be before we have to fill in a 20 page clearance form just to drive within 2 miles of a school.

Very depressing.

Perhaps there should be a new rule. If you pass a law "for the children" then you can never run for any political office after your current term, ever.

Then, perhaps the bad ideas that keep getting foisted on everyone might make them stop and think for a minute. If it truly is for the safety of children and passes, then you did your part and it was good. Otherwise they'd drop it.

The sheep are already rising up in anger... It's worthwile checking out http://openinternet.com.au/take_action/ for a ten step list on supporting open internet against government censorship.

Helping their citizens make better choices, by taking away all their choices.

The problem with censorship is when it begins then people squauk saying, hey if your gonna block that then you need to block this too. To stay in the good graces of the people the government will then need to expand it control and continually grows so it can appease fringe groups whom feel their way of life is moral and just and the way everyone should live.
