Once again I had a great time at Mardi Gras. I was determined not to let being unemployed make me miss it; I have been every year since 2005 (even in 2011, when there was no furry float) and I'm superstitious about missing a year now. It was just as well, as this was the biggest (ie, most fursuiters and other attendees) and best one so far.
My trip had a rocky start, with my flight down to Sydney being cancelled. After a panicked phone call I was put on a flight the following morning, still in time for Mardi Gras and I even scored a $100 travel voucher for it (in fact, I got two for some reason, making me seriously consider a trip down to Melbourne). temba picked me up from the airport and was a wonderful host as always, along with his housemates Packer and Mindfyer. I got my usual case of butterflies, but I've done it so many times now I'm not really all that nervous anymore. I took a train down with Moreth (who went dressed as Princess Peach for the gaymers' float). It was a much more pleasant wait this time as we only had to deal with a few showers this time. I also remembered to wear my undersuit under my regular clothes, making changing into Rattus much easier. Because the weather was kinder and I hadn't injured myself on the way this time, I was able to explore some of the other floats, the results of which you can see in my photo album. The march itself was great fun as always. My only regret is that I should have taken this opportunity to do it on foot this year. The weather was good for it and I'm sure I would have been up to it physically, though I expect I would have flagged towards the end. I'm in awe of the energy Stripe Husky put into marching on foot this year.
