The pretender

I attended a knowledge session about researching web usability. While looking for the way in, a fellow attendee said, "You look like an IT person." I was very pleased to be told so, but it got me thinking. I've been spending a lot of my life pretending. I'm a pretend rat, a pretend librarian, a pretend IT professional. Isn't it about time I grew up and stopped pretending?

It's a possibility but I wouldn't recommend it ;)

Best advice I've heard all day. :) By the way, it may interest you to know I've not only heard of Cerebus the Aardvark, I have several of the graphic novels.

I know, it's been great to find others with an interest in my favourite aardvark. I'm just about to get the fifth graphic novel :)

Question: Who is Marko? When you know who you are, then you don't have to pretend anymore.

*humms along Queen's: I am the Great Pretender*
We all have masks that hide who we are, some even to their own selves.
As long as you know who you are inside, then no one can rattle your cage. Mental or physical.

Or am I totally off track here??

To me you aren't "pretend" anything.
You are a nice guy/rat who likes books as much as I do, have a wonderful website about marsupials, very good with IT and loves Ristin.
That isn't pretending to me.
Or am I still totally off track??

I guess I'm genuine about the important things.

It's just a matter of stop pretending to be something and roll up the sleeves and WORK to be something. :)

Hmmmm, from experience, arn't most of the Australian workforce pretenders? lol....It's what we are taught to put on our resumes and say in our interviews...

And on that note, please enjoy Enter the Cow-orker, coming not-quite-live from an unnamed Australian governmental department. (Best is to start with the early entries and move forwards, to best savor the joy(*)..)

(*) In the Ren & Stimpy sense.

Oh, I don't know. I've spent most of my time in the grown-up world feeling like I had slept through a class on "how to be a real adult" that everyone else went to. A couple dozen desperate conversations later, and I was rather surprised to find out that *everyone* feels like they're faking their way through Responsible Adulthood, especially while in our age group.

Humans pretend. Constantly. We create fantasies for ourselves. Some of them get shared and grow up to be realities. (Democracy comes to mind.) Others stay small and keep us happily occupied when stuck in rush hour traffic. (Can't say what comes to mind there. ;) Someone who loses that ability to play with the fantastic, who sets aside their wonder because they think it's childish, has lost a piece of their humanity.

The important thing is to be loyal to your own self. Is it important to you to be a librarian and and IT professional? Then project confidence and comptence until the are effortless. (In other words, "fake it 'til you make it".) If these things aren't important to you, don't waste time and effort. Take time to realize what is important, and find a different reality to create.

In other words, follow your dreams.

*scurries off to look at your LJ and notes the references to humping and 'coons* Okay. Please enjoy my TMI posts. Unfortunately, there haven't been any for some time (though I do plan to do more eventually) but you might want to try the following links (which hopefully won't work for those not on the TMI filter):
