Every year, Australia stops for a horse race called the Melbourne Cup
. One of the traditions that have evolved around this horse race is that of wearing outlandish hats. This used to be a female tradition, but men have since joined in, usually with variants on the theme of alcohol consumption. My office had a Melbourne Cup lunch and conducted a Melbourne Cup hat competition. One of the categories was for the most unusual hat, and I entered a hat with a plush horse as the centrepiece. I won! It was the first time I've ever won anything (just about) so I was taken quite by surprise.

So the hats are /supposed/ to be stupid?
'Cause all day today I was totally sniggering at all the women walking around in those ugly ass head-pieces.

I'm not sure for women, but they are meant to be stupid when men wear them.

Cute hat, nice idea with the horse plushy on the hat. I think that the hat suits ya, lol jk, or maybe not. XD

I like the hat.
Also, I'm amazed. I had no idea Queenslanders gave a flying about the Melbourne Cup... even most Victorians don't. :-)

Really? Melbourne Cup is big
here. I thought it was all over the country.

It depends on the people. Because it is a public holiday here, while many more people go to the races, most people see it as a chance for a long weekend. And other cities in Victoria see it as a chance for a big sale. And while a lot of people (including me) watch only this horse race out of the year, I still don't think Cup Day is worth a public holiday. Especially after they took Show Day away.

Hee! Very cute. ^_^ So, it's sort an egalitarian, unpretentious version of Royal Ascot's "Ladies' Day"?
It strikes me that Meeko would lend himself well to being worn as a hat.. ^_^

No, Oaks Day, which is basically Ladies' Day, is on Thursday.
